Jalón (Xaló in Valencian) is a town in Alicante province known, among other things, for the beautiful valley 'Vall del Pop' in which it is located. You can make fine walks there and there are many bodegas (wineries). The area has already been named the area with the finest climate in the world by the World Health Organisation, because both summer and winter temperatures are very pleasant. A suitable holiday destination therefore!
Historical Moorish rule in the region is still visible in Jalón. The centre has many narrow streets with typical Moorish houses. At the time of the domination, Jalón had two Moorish castles and in Jalón's market square stands the neoclassical church Santa Maria with its blue dome. A mosque used to stand on the site of this church. A goods market is held around the fountain in the square every Tuesday.
Running straight through the town is the River Gorgos and there are two town bridges across it. Along the river, you can shop at boutiques or have a drink on a terrace, for example. A market, the Rastro de Jalón, is held next to the river every Saturday. Stroll around Jalón and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere!
Jalón is surrounded by the green Vall del Pop valley and the Goros river. There are also mountains, such as the Sierra de Bernia (1128m), Penyo de la Mica (806m), Sierra del Forner (889) and the Castellet (608m). Nature there is very Spanish; olive trees, conifers, vineyards and orange plantations. You can explore nature by hiking through the mountains, but you can also choose to hop on a mountain bike. Another idea: in the town of Benissa, you can rent a horse or quad bike. The valley's official tourist information offers extensive information on renting and hiking and biking routes.

Many wines are produced in the Jalón valley. History has it that the Moors from Jalón sent wines to the Valencian court in the late 15th century. Wine was then the region's main economic product for centuries. Many bodegas, or wineries, in the area produce the sweet, white wines Moscatel and Mistela. In addition, many hearty, red wines come from there. When in the area, it is a must to visit a bodega and see exactly how the process works. Of course, you can also taste some delicious wine there.
